Proxy Marriage: Start Your Life Together Even if You Are Miles Apart

A proxy marriage is a ceremony when either the bride or the groom, or both, isn't physically present during the wedding. A designated proxy, or stand-in, represents the bride or groom, or both, who are unable to attend the event.
Proxy marriages are often used in cases of active duty military or in other situations where either party cannot travel. A proxy marriage enables a couple to begin their lives together right away, and may help a spouse qualify for important benefits. Moreover, after a proxy marriage has been consummated, a CR-1 or IR-1 marriage visa can be obtained for the spouse of an American citizen.
Very few states in the U.S. allow proxy marriages. However, once a proxy marriage takes place and is consummated, it is considered legal and valid by all branches of the U.S. military, every state in the U.S. except Iowa, and most countries. Even if a proxy marriage is not subsequently consummated, and therefore not valid for U.S. immigration law purposes, the marriage certificate may still be used as proof of a relationship when applying for a K-1 fiancee visa.
Requirements of States Allowing Proxy Marriage
California: One party needs to appear in person and the absent party must be on active duty with the military currently deployed in a conflict of war
Colorado and Texas: One party needs to appear in person
Montana: Allows for "double proxy" marriage, meaning neither party needs to appear in person; one party needs to be on active duty with the military, but does not have to be currently deployed
